You know the one. It’s quoted all the time:
“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”
Whenever I see this quoted, I see Haruki Murakami’s name underneath the quote. However, he never said it. A character in his book said it and I highly doubt Murakami believes it.
I picked up Murakami’s 1987 book Norwegian Wood to discover the context for this quote. In this episode, I share information about the character who made this quote, the context in which it was said, and why it bothers me so much. Think of it as a short, fun rant.
