Books Read during February
I finished reading straight through the Bible on February 26th. I started on January 1st and it took 57 days to finish Genesis through Revelation. I had originally intended to insert the Apocrypha between the Old & New Testaments, but ran out of time.
This was my first time reading through the King James Version (KJV) and I liked it very much. I became so enamored with the KJV that I decided to learn more about it and picked up the God’s Secretaries book. Here’s my podcast episode about the King James Bible:
Books for March
I get back into The Immortal Books in March and will read these from bottom to top. Last year, I started reading the Greek Tragedies and enjoyed them so much I decided to read all surviving plays and even the fragments of lost plays. So, these are the remaining tragedy plays by Euripides. I’ll be reading the following plays:
Bacchae, Iphigenia at Aulis, Rhesus
Suppliants, Phoenician Women
Ion, Helen, Orestes
Hippolytus Temporizes
I’m excited to dig into Confucius but am not sure what to expect.
February Bookish Adventures
I had the most insane thing happen during February. My favorite American ever is Frederick Douglass. I led an in-person reading group during February covering Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. One of the attendees was the great, great, great granddaughter of Frederick Douglass! Her name is April and she told us some of the family stories about Frederick. You can learn more about April here.
Look, Ma, I’m in the Paper!
Williamson Scene did a nice article about the reading project this past month.
Allen Levi, a Fan of Books of Titans
One of my favorite books from last year was Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. We’ve since connected through mutual friends and in my role as business manager at Landmark Booksellers. Here he is with a Books of Titans mug. It’s been an absolute joy to get to know Allen and I hope to have him at Landmark later this year for an author event.
March’s Short Great Book
I’m leading an in-person and online reading group this year covering one Short Great Book per month. The book for March is Agamemnon by Aeschylus. I’d love for you to join. To do so, just become a paid subscriber here and I’ll send Zoom call details to you.
Seeing from the article about your reading project that you have an "Immortal Books" wall in your bookstore, have you considered offering packages of books from that wall for purchase? I know I and others who are interested in projects like this are always asking which version or translation to buy, so it would be a great service to be able to order packages, say, for example, based on your spring and fall "semesters."
Hi Deborah - great idea - we have something pretty similar at Landmark Booksellers where we offer a Books of Titans Monthly Subscription - https://www.landmarkbooksellers.com/subscriptions/the-books-of-titans-subscription/
That is a good idea about adding one that coincides with my Immortal Books reading list. Let me give that some thought and maybe you'll see it on the way in the near future. Thanks!
